First things first— congratulations to Claire N. for getting into med school! We’re so happy and excited for you; you’re going from one great good-doing adventure to another!
Today we woke up extra early (4:45 am) to try and get in as many miles as possible before the heat got too bad. We stretched out our rest stops to be far apart, and did a lot of climbing in between! Lunch was next to a BBQ food truck and ice cream store, which gave us some options/additions other than PB&J. 85 miles, almost 5,000 feet of elevation gain, and 99 degree heat left us exhausted and ready for some shade and air conditioning.
At our last rest stop (which was just a water stop, 12 miles from our destination) Claire N. found out that she got into med school—and it starts Monday!! So we had to send her off tonight :( We’re so sad to see her go, and so glad we got to ride from coast to coast with her. But most of all we’re incredibly proud of her for doing such amazing things both on and off the bike. Tailwinds, Claire N.! We love you!!!!
After showering and eating dinner provided by our generous hosts, we all piled in the van and drove to the airport to say goodbye and cry. Now (post-dessert) it’s time for some much needed rest. Tomorrow is a big day; we cross our final state line into California and finally, finally get to touch the Pacific Ocean! As much as I hate to say it, it’s true: we’re nearing the end of the ride. Just seven days left not including today, and saying bye to Claire N. early gave us a preview of next week… I’m not ready!
