Our twelfth state! (if I counted correctly) Idaho! The AQI determined that it was safe to ride today, despite the ominous scenery— so we left Montana for the great potato state! After the first twenty miles, we felt uncomfortable riding in the current conditions and as a team decided to shuttle until we were in an area where the AQI dropped significantly. We lost about 30 miles to shuttling, so we ended up doing about 45 total on the bikes. But while we waited we hung out with some trout and went around a small town in Montana, or (on the other side of the shuttle) watched mountain bikers take ski lifts up the hills and ride down!
After we got into better air, we sailed into Idaho and the pacific time zone. Idaho is beautiful and hilly, reminiscent of New York state… if NY was hotter and drier. The final stretch of the day was on a lovely winding bike path also used by many mountain bikers that run the trails in the area. We came across a bike store along the path and got some cool gear!
The Pinehurst stayover didn’t have wifi or signal, (thus this post is a day late) but it did have McDonalds— so we got to zoom with an I4k alum and enjoy some fries. The rest of the day was spent mostly indoors (it’s so hot!) just relaxing, writing postcards, journaling, or napping. One more day in Idaho tomorrow, and then we’ll be in Washington!
