We rolled out of our stayover at the YMCA into an absolutely stunning and crisp morning. Willard had an enormous spider on his shoe and provided a bit of entertainment at 6:00 a.m. (Kate later figured out it was a Wolf spider, not venomous to humans— whew!) Our host helped us leave the facility and directed traffic a bit while the first group set out, and then all that was ahead was sunshine! The first half of today focused around two large and long hills, which for most were easier than yesterday— I take that as a good sign and predictive of the next few weeks as we adjust.
The bike path we took today was again a hit; Andy’s favorite areas of the ride were “the flat parts” and Claire P., Sofie and I rode to the Mamma Mia! soundtrack. Ryan really liked the rest stop at the Erie canal, and thought about the infrastructure required to hold it together. Speaking of holding things together; big round of applause to our mechanics on the team, Ellie and Cam, for doing so much these past few days at nearly every available moment. They spent a lot of time working on my bike today, and most of us have some issue or another that could be looked at. So they deserve all the thanks in the world for their hard and messy work.
This evening we met with Sandra, a 2007 & 2008 I4K alum, the first and second years of this organization. She was so generous and provided us with a delicious dinner and memories from her trip that make us all the more excited for what’s to come in the next few months. It really is inspiring to get to talk to someone who knows exactly how we’re feeling and how we likely will feel, tomorrow, next month, and even 14 years later. She shared some great I4K traditions and tips, and made me more excited to write down every detail of this journey! I look forward to being in her position in the future. Her fondness of those first rides makes me nostalgic already…
So here’s a bunch of pictures from today, fond memories for years to come.
