BIOGRAPHY
Hi! My name is Austin Li and I am currently a senior and will be graduating this spring studying Materials Science and Engineering. I am from Naperville, IL. I chose my major because I love learning about why materials act the way they do and how we can improve them, which came from my love of running shoes and bicycles. I also enjoy doing many things outside of academics! In terms of physical activity, I enjoy running, cycling, snowboarding, and practicing wushu, which is a form of Chinese martial arts. I also enjoy playing in the school concert and jazz bands as a trumpet player. My dream career would be to end up in the sporting industry, improving sports equipment and helping more people find the enjoyment that I have found with running and cycling. I’m excited to be able to combine my love of cycling with a cause that I think is extremely important.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
It’s hard to fully describe the affect that cancer has on our lives. It feels so unfair and scary. My mom had breast cancer when I was 8 years old, before I even knew what cancer was. I remember my mom being in the hospital, so tired and weak, yet still finding the strength to ask me if I had practiced the piano that day. I was scared, confused, and worried that I might lose my mom. Fortunately, she is doing very well today and it reminds me of how strong she is. Cancer still showed up in my life, affecting my close friend’s father and being a possibility for my cousin. It’s driven me to want to be a part of this trip. To hear and share stories in order to inspire those to join us in fighting against cancer.
