Day 26: Madison, WI to Reedsburg, WI-- Beach bums

The team at Devil’s Lake!

This morning we left Madison feeling good and ready for nearly perfect riding weather— a bit chilly in the morning, high of 75, nearly no wind! We had some time on a bike path that ran along the highway and got a decent amount of climbing/descending in both in and out of Devil’s Lake State Park, which was the main event for today.

But before that, just over a third of the way through the ride, we came across a playground… and you know we can’t resist! Especially not when there’s a zipline! Okay, that’s being a bit dramatic— but I’d consider it a tourist attraction given the circumstances.

Our second stop was easily 10/10— the best lunch break ever! Dipping down into a valley within Devil’s Lake State Park, we rolled onto the shore of Devil’s Lake for leftovers, PB&J’s, cookies, swimming, kayaking, and lounging on the sand! We planned to spend (and did spend) quite a bit of time there as today’s ride was only just over 60 miles. Nearly the entire afternoon was spent on the beach or in the warm water hanging out with the fish. Some of us biked around the lake to see the gift shop and others got ice cream or napped.

As we were packing things up to head out, we got talking with a fellow beach-goer who shared her experience with cancer and graciously allowed us to create another portrait! The positivity that she radiated and the mutual respect and admiration we had for each other was amazing. We agreed that sharing her story and spreading the word about rare forms of cancer is one of the best ways to support and improve the lives of those who are currently dealing with its difficulties. I can’t wait to have her story posted!

Sour is actually a living ray of sunshine

Because we spent so much time at Devil’s Lake, we arrived at our stayover in the late afternoon. With cold hose showers and pizza for dinner, the playfulness and joy of the day settled into comfort and fulfillment. We’re all now headed to bed, exhausted and so, so, happy!

This is honestly an awful photo but captures our real downtime very well— too tired to do anything. Ellie and Sour napping prove that point.
