Hey all! My name is Pablo Rojas, born and raised in South Side, Chicago. I am the first of my family to attend college, so it is extremely exciting to be a freshman at the University of Illinois! My favorite pastimes include attending concerts, finding the perfect coffee shop, and obsessing over the city lights at dusk. I am Undeclared at the moment, but I am set on studying Education and becoming a high school English teacher. I want to help students realize the importance of self-expression, especially during such a crucial phase in their development as people. I naturally have an adventurous spirit, so when I heard of Illini 4000, I immediately wanted to be a part of this wonderful journey.

Personal Statement

We often hear about cancer through statistics and data, through news headlines and medical TV commercials. Because of this, we sometimes fail to realize that those affected are living lives as vivid and complex as our own. However, through the Portraits Project, there is a certain exposure of the humanity of the situation. Through this cause, people will be able to glimpse into the lives of cancer patients and survivors, and become inspired through the stories told. A disease like cancer can be so discouraging, that I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to face it head-on. With Illini 4000, not only will I have the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than myself, but I will be able to provide some much-needed hope that one day, we can overcome this disease.
