My name is Paul Latreille and I am a freshman enrolled at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign hoping to major in Bioengineering. I was raised in Glenview, Illinois where I learned to love distance running and biking. I also enjoy learning about history and government in addition to listening to podcasts. In my hometown I was a member of the local Boyscout Troop 55 where I developed an affinity for the outdoors through going to hikes and campouts in the Porcupine Mountains among other places. I always love the chance to travel and thus leaped at this opportunity to do just that while at the same time helping out less fortunate people and doing good in the world.

Personal Statement

I am forever grateful that neither myself nor my family members have been affected by a serious form of cancer. The first time I came into contact with the devastating effects of cancer was when I interned at Northwestern Memorial Hospital the summer before my freshman year. I had the educational opportunity of being able to shadow physicians during procedures. One patient there had been diagnosed with prostate cancer that had metastasized such that he had to get his prostate and bladder removed along with parts of his large intestine. This surgery had left a nasty Y-shaped cut on his abdomen from which he had to get staples removed the day I was shadowing. The procedure was incredibly painful but all throughout it he was cracking jokes in order to lighten the mood. His determination and willingness to find humor and happiness in his terrible position inspired me to live my own life better and to do what I can to help others to find medical solutions and emotional strength in the fight against cancer.
