While riding across the country, our team makes every effort to decrease the cost of our journey. After all, the team recognizes that it exists to serve cancer patients. Thus, luxuries like hotels and restaurant food are simply out of question. On the contrary, we’re not afraid to sleep on the ground and eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
You can, however, help make the ride a bit more comfortable! Each summer, dozens of churches and community centers across America offer to shelter our team for a night. Some of these hosts even go as far as to prepare a homecooked meal or find showers for our team! We can tell you that there is nothing more wonderful after a day of riding 90+ miles than a homecooked meal, a shower, and a place to put down their sleeping bag!
From our experience, we’ve noticed that hosting the Illini 4000 Bike America team is a wonderful opportunity for congregations, scout troops, U of I alumni groups and community organizations to come together in the fight against cancer. If you interested, we’d love to sit down with the members of your organization who have been affected by cancer as part The Portraits Project. Of course, we’d love to talk about our journey and the steps you can take to live cancer free.
If you, your church, or community organization would like to host our team, please email contactus@illini4000.org with your name and location.
Thank you for your interest! We look forward to seeing you this summer!
